Supervisor's Guide to Information Policy, Privacy, and Security

What is sensitive data?

Sensitive data includes, but is not limited to, personal, financial, and legal information, as well as information protected by state or federal law, or university policy. It is often a matter of context; anything that can be used for identity theft, as well as anything that can cause significant harm if disclosed without proper authorization, is sensitive data. Especially important are Social Security numbers (SSNs) and credit card numbers.

For detailed types of sensitive data, see the http://kb.iu.edu/data/augs.html.
